Seeped in the Magical Realms

My critical essay is starting to take over my life--now that I've actually started the thing. Consequently, I'm stuck in figuring out the whys and hows of good magical realism, and--more importantly--where and how it differentiates itself from plain old fantasy.

It's a very odd distinction that we humans have decided to take part in: labeling. Why things need to be broken down into different categories, only to then be split into sub-genres, then sub-sub-genres, then the whole thing is screwed up by genre cross-overs. The whole thing is ridiculous. The fact that many different books and authors have absolutely no say as to how they are marketed is somewhat frightening. They merely look to which "label" will sell the most units. Stupid if you ask me, especially when there are so many genres with amazing writing but are frowned upon by the "literary" circle.

Whatever, though. I suppose that when my novel gets published, I'll be excited, regardless of whether or not they want to market it to eight-year-old cosplayers.

More Gibberish tomorrow. And the Pineapple Express review is up here, with a good chance of a review for Tropical Thunder showing up tomorrow.

+The Way to a Woman's Heart+

Don't question it, just make it happen.

Oh, and here is a review for Swing Vote. Pineapple Express might show up here by the end of the day.

Freaking Excited!!!

Good week, good people!!!

If you're wondering why I have this sudden affinity for exclamation marks, it is because I have just ordered my Wacom Bamboo tablet. WOOT! Seriously, I'm way excited, since I thought that I wouldn't be able to order one until the end of the month. Luckily that date got bumped up since my eBay auctions went so well it was stupid, and I should have one in my grubby paws by Saturday. Plus, I'm halfway to affording Toon Boom on top of procuring my tablet. Animation here I come.

In the meantime though, since I realize that I have more than a few new projects, as pointed out by my good friend, I'm going to be making some personal distraction cuts. First and foremost, Scramble will no longer be the vice of my times. I'm calling it off--at least the live games. I'm not sure what else is going to take the hit just yet. Possibly this blog, mayhap my film reviews, but I think that both We've Got Brains and Gibberish will stay intact. (Honestly, the whole reason I started this blog was to get a bit of buzz for the upcoming site, which is now on hiatus. So, Gibberish will be my compensation.)

Anyway, I've found out that there should be a review up for Swing Vote sometime soon, and I should be putting one together for Pineapple Express later today. No promises on either of them though, I really need to start working on my critical paper.

Speaking of, I'm off...

You Have to Wonder

As I'm checking my email today, there is this advertisement for True dating. There is this girl bobbing and bouncing in her tiny square world, trying to have a good time "listening" and "rocking out" to her music. Yet it's on about a twenty second loop, where this poor girl just keeps dancing and dancing and dancing, boiling her entire personality into these few moments of: "I'm sexy and having so much fun. Click this ad for girls that are nothing like me..."

Not only do I have to wonder about the ad and all that it entails, but I also have to wonder what type of person is so desperate for affirmation and attention that they'll agree to be a dumbass for half a minute, then show it to the world. Though I suppose that this is answered by the fact that YouTube is more for stupid videos of stupid people doing stupid stuff than for anything else. And at least this girl is getting paid for it.

As this weekend rolls in, I'm happy that I was able to have all three comics up and running this week. Hopefully this trend will continue--even more so once I get my tablet (which my eBay auctions are going much better than I thought they would be). In the meantime, I have an anniversary-tastic weekend--my wife and I are celebrating four years--and will include a viewing of Pineapple Express, and a review will be up, at the latest, on Monday. I would've seen it earlier, but you know, life got in the way.

Until Monday, good people.

+Earthworm Farm+

I can't decide if the worms are really big or if the fence is really small...
